Voices for Change is a diverse group of youth and adults who work towards empowering young people to take action and create positive change in Howard County.
Voices for Change (V4C) is coordinated by the Howard County Government’s Office of Children’s Services, but receives major sponsorship from the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, the Columbia Association Youth & Teen Center, and the Howard County Public School System. The group was established in 2005 and the signature Youth Summit began in 2007. At the summit, groups of V4C members present their findings on the issue of their choice to other middle and high school students . It is an exciting event with keynote speakers, breakout sessions, lunch, and a feeling of empowerment. The Youth Summit is held annually in March at Bridgeway Community Church.
In recent years, Voices for Change wrote a response to Council Resolution-16 (CR-16) and presented to the County Council, Local Children’s Board, California Association of Student Councils, and Board of Education. Much publicity has surrounded this resolution, including the launching of Sprigeo.
Voices for Change is made up of members of each Howard County high school, a handful of middle schools, and Glenelg Country School. The groups meets twice a month on Tuesdays from 5:00-7:00 at the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks Headquarters Building. Dinner is provided at each of these meetings. V4C creates a welcoming, friendly environment for all members, old and new. To join, you must be a Howard County resident in atleast the eighth grade. An application for membership can be found here and should be returned by the second meeting you attend.
